The county-gaol was erected near the site of the old castle in Dorchester, between 1789 and 1795, at an expense of £16,179,
and comprises a gaol, sheriffs' ward, penitentiary, and house of correction; the exterior is handsome,
and the interior is divided into various departments for the classification of prisoners, having four wings,
which, though detached, communicate with the central building by cast-iron bridges

Robert BEAVIS (1809-1883), among those listed below, grew up in Fordington and aged 20 was arrested for sheep stealing and sent to Dorchester Prison where he was admitted on 21st Oct 1829. He was tried at Dorchester Assizes on 12th March 1830, found guilty and initially sentenced to DEATH. This was commuted to Transportation to Australia for Life. He was then committed to the Prison Hulk HMS Captivity which was at that time moored at Devonport. HMS Captivity had started life as HMS Monmouth and been launched in 1772 as a third rate ship of the line carrying 64 guns. Having served in a number of campaigns she was eventually brought back to England at the conclusion of the American War of Independence and paid off in July 1784. She returned to service on 20th Oct 1796 renamed as HMS Captivity and fitted out as a prison ship eventually becoming a 'Prison Hulk'. Plans for a ship of this class survive at the Royal Museum Greenwhich and give a good, if faint, idea of the type of Prison Hulk he entered (see image below). Robert BEAVIS boarded the Prison Ship 'Burrell' on 22nd July 1830 and arrived in New South Wales on 31st Dec 1830.

Dorset Quarter Sessions Order Books 1827-1836 (QSM 1/16) Image 114/379 Charles GARRETT Convicted of Larceny - To be imprisoned in the House of Correction to hard labour for the space of 3 calendar months Also that he be once privately whipped previous to his being discharged - Also Image 116/379 It is ordered at the prayer of John Masters the prosecutor of Charles GARRETT tried and convicted before this court of felony that the treasurer do pay unto the said John Masters the sum of one pound and ten shillings which to this court doth seem reasonable for the expenses trouble and attendance of himself and witnesses therein

Dorset County Chronicle Thursday 23rd July 1829 Page 3 : Charles GARRETT was indicted for stealing horse beans the property of Mr John Masters of Fordington. The prisoner pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to 3 months imprisonment with hard labour and to be once privately whipped

Newspaper Salisbury and Winchester Journal Monday 22nd Mar 1830 Page 4 : Dorset Assizes : -- under those sentenced to 14 years transportation:- " Ann WARR, for stealing a purse, containing four half sovereigns and upwards of nine pounds worth of silver; the property of John FARR of Merriott. ". From the Dorset County Chronicle Thurs 11th Mar 1830 Page 4 it appears that Ann WARR had been arrested for picking pockets at Maiden Newton Fair.

Newspaper Morning Herald (London) Wed 7th July 1830 Page 4 "NEW SOUTH WALES" -----extract --- "The women who were a few months since landed from the Lucy Davidson are so very troublesome being continually brought before the police office that the Magistrates are of opinion they are the most evil-disposed crew that have been landed in the colony for many a day!"

Note:- The above report however seems to relate to a previous voyage of the Lucy Davidson conveying female convicts to New South Wales which appears to have departed from London on 20th July 1829 and after making port at Hobart arrived at Port Jackson on 29th Nov 1829.

Source: TROVE The Australian (Sydney, NSW: 1824-1848) Page 3 : On the 20th (Jan 1830) ult the ship Lucy Davidson arrived at Launceston from Sydney, to load with Colonial produce for London.

There is another newspaper report in the Morning Advertiser for Fri 29th Oct 1830 which reports the arrival of the Lucy Davidson from Van Diemens Land at Dover on 27th Oct 1830. It is clear therefore that Ann WARR was never placed on board a hulk to await deportation and does not therefore appear on any of the 'prison hulk' registers.

[Note:- Dorset Quarter Session Order Books 1827-1836 (QSM 1/16) Image 154/379 "PRISONERS:- William CHAPMAN Convicted of Larceny - To Be transported beyond the seas for the term of fourteen years" - ALSO Image 155/379 Order for Transportation of William CHAPMAN Whereas William CHAPMAN was convicted befor ethis Court of Larceny for which offence he was sentenced to be Transported beyond the seas for thye term of fourteen years It is therefore in pursuance of an act of parliament made and passed in the Fifth year of the Reign of his late Majesty King George the Fourth Intitled "An Act for the effectual Transportation of offenders from Great Broitain Ordered and Adjudged by this Court that the above named Convict be Transported beyond the seas accordingly for the term of fourteen years to such place or places as his Majesty by and with the advice of his provy council may order and direct. ]

[Note:- Brief entry of his sentence appeared in the in Sherborne Mercury Mon 19th July 1830 page 3 - A fuller report however is in the Dorset County Chronicle Thursday 22nd July 1830 Page 3: "William CHAPMAN, was put to the bar, charged with having stolen a pick-axe, and two faggots, the property of Mr Edward ELLIOTT of Fordington. The facts of the case were these: on the night of the 3rd of July, the prisoner was seen proceeding homewards with two faggots on his back, and suspicion being excited that they were stolen, an examination took place and it was discovered thatthe faggot rick of Mr ELLIOTT had been pulled to pieces and some faggots stolen. A pick-axe which had been left near it, was also missed, but subsequently found on the path by which CHAPMAN must have proceeded. The faggots found on Chapman were identified by Mr Elliott as his property. There was a second indictment against the prisoner charging himunder Peel's act, with having been convicted of and imprisoned for a former offence. It appeared that the prisoner had already undergone imprisonment for no less than four other bprevious convictions. The Jury found him guilty on both indictments and the Court after a few pretty severe remarks sentenced him to Transportation for fourteen years ]

[Brief mention in Sherbonr Mercury Mon 27th June 1831 Page 4 - but better in Dorset County Chronicle Thursday 30 June 1831 " William LOADER was indicted for having stolen a garnet ring, set in gold, the property of Louisa VENNER of Weymouth. Miss VENNER is a Lady residing at No 4 York Buildings Weymouth with her mother and on the 4th of April, her ring was in a drawer but was missed in the course of the day. As the prisoner, who is a glazier, had been in the room that morning to repair a window suspicion naturally became fixed upon him. He was consequently apprehended on the 11th April and on searching him, the ring lost by Miss VENNER was found in his pocket - several witnesses were called for the defence to depose to the character of the porisoner. The chairman having summed up the Jury returned a verdict of Guilty. Judgement was postponed until today.]

Dorset Quarter Sessions Order Books 1827-1836 QSM 1/16 - Henry STANLEY - Indicted for an assault on Henry ANDREWS and found guilty, To be Imprisoned in the House of Correction for the space of twelve Caledar Months.

Dorset County Chronicle -Thurs 27th Oct 1831 - Page 3 Dorset Michaelmas Sessions: ---RIOTERS- Henry STANLEY and William STANLEY, were charged with having violently assaulted Henry ANDREWS, at Fordington, on the evening of Monday October 17.
William STANLEY pleaded guilty.
The case was accordingtly proceeded in obly against Henry STANLEY

MR GAMBIER having stated the case to the jury called henry ANDREWS, who deposed that he was a blacksmith, residing at Fordington, on the evening of October 17, he was returning about 9 oclock from Dorchester; there were two other persons with him, and they were assisting a person who was intoxicated. As they were proceeding, the witness saw Henry and William STANLEY; the former of whom struck down the man whom the witness was conducting, and afterwards attacked witness, stiking him with a bludgeon a very severe bllow on the head, which cut the skin open. The witness remonstrated and the prisoner then repeated his blow, cutting open the crown of witnesses head to the extent of about four inches in length. William STANLEY also attacked him. Witness is positive that it was the prisoner Henry who struck him.

Mary LODER, on being called said she heard blows struck and a man fell against her door; on which she went out, and saw a man lying against her house: he was a stranger. She saw the prosecutor endeavouring to persuade the other man to go home; and she then saw Henry STANLEY strike ANDREWS a heavy blow onhis head with a large stick: and William STANLEY also struck himacross the shoulder. They had both sticks in their hands.

The prisoner Henry in his defence said that the affray commenced by the man accompanying the witness calling out "Ashley for ever".!" He called his son, Adolphus Frederick STANLEY who deposed that he was with his father on the night in question and saw ANDREWS. Witness his father and cousin had just come out of the Black Dog, a beer house at Fordington, and saw four men come up of whom one was prosecutor. They called out "Ashley for ever!" and then prisoner called out "Ponsonby for ever!" and struck one of the men with the prosecutor ; William STANLEY struck ANDREWS, but witness is positive that his father Henry STANLEY did not strike him. William STANLEY struck ANDREWS twice on the head. ANDREWS came up to Henry STANLEY and said "Stanley you know me " to which STANLEY said "yes". They went on a little further and then William STANLEY struck the prosecutor again. No blow was struck after Mary LODER came out: she did not come out untill all the blows were struck, and it was all over.

The Chairman summed up and the Jury immediately returned a verdict of Guilty.

William STANLEY had been previously found guilty in the other court, before D.O.P. Okeden Esq., of a riot assault on a farmer named GAPPER.

[Note 1:- *Eliza FOX resident in Freke's Alley South Back street Holy Trinity Parish Dorchester had her illegitimate son William FOX baptised at HT on 28th Jan 1830. The baptism includes :- " The reputed father is William JOHNSON coachman in the service of Jas [James] HENNING Esq, Rev George Wood Rector". This clearly relates to the above Bastardy order. William [no father recorded] married Elizabeth TILLEY at FStG on 13th Aug 1854. He is in the 1861 Census living in Mill Street aged 30 a coal merchant labourer born Holy Trinity Dorchester married with 3 children.

[Note 2:- Eliza FOX resident in Freke's Alley West Back street Holy Trinity Parish Dorchester referred to as a 'strumpet' had an illegitimate daughter Marianne [Mary Ann] FOX baptised at Holy Trinity Church on 5th Feb 1832. Marianne married at FStG church on 29th Sep 1850 recorded as being under age to George GIBBS.

[Note 3:- Eliza FOX from Mill Street, a Single woman, had her daughter Sarah FOX [GRO Births Dorchester Dist 1840 3rd qtr Page 52 Vol 8 Line 5 ] baptised at St Georges church in Fordington on 5th Oct 1840. A side line entry shows that Sarah was received into the church before the congregation on 13th Oct 1853. in the 1861 Census Sarah FOX is living in Mill St Fordington a Lodger working as a cloth Factory worker aged 18 born Fordington. Sarah [no father recorded] married George LESTER (1840-1902) at FStG 16th Oct 1864. They are living in Mill Street Fordington in the 1871 Census along with George's widowed brother and his children. Sarah LESTER nee FOX was buried at FStG 1st Nov 1887 aged 48]

[Note 4:- Eliza FOX is in the June 1841 Census Living in Fordington in Mill Street. Eliza aged 30/34. With her are 3 children (1) Caroline FOX aged 18. She was baptised at Minterne Magna on 1st July 1824 recorded as the natural daughter of Eliza FOX abode Mintern Magna. No other info recorded on the parish register but clear Eliza was unmarried. A Bastardy Bond however was issued dated 28th Jan 1824 naming the father as John HELLION of Buckland Newton in Dorset. Caroline was arrested on 17th Apr 1843 aged 20 charged with receiving stolen goods. (2) Mary Ann FOX Aged 9 years See Note:- 2 above bap HT 5th Feb 1832 . (3) Sarah FOX aged 8 months See Note:- 3 above bap FStG 5th Oct 1840.

[Note 5:- Eliza FOX is in the March 1851 Census living in Mill Street Fordington Unmarried aged 43 an Agricultural Labourer born at Mintern Magna . Eliza is probably the Eliza FOX from Gregory's Buildings in Fordington that was buried at St Georges Church on 13th Oct 1857 although her age was estimated then as being 60 whereas earlier prison records suggest she was probably born about 1806 making her aged 51. She is not in any of the later census returns. I have not located a baptism for her at Mintern Magna.

Dorset County Chronicle Thursday14th Feb 1833 Page 4 : INQUEST On Tuesday afternoon, an inquest was held at the Town Hall before C.ARDEN Esq, mayor and coroner for this borough, upon the body of a new born female child, that had been that morning discovered in a privy on the premises of Mr CURTIS, grocer. It appeared from the evidence adduced before the Jury, that a young woman named Elizabeth CASHER, had been secretly delivered of an illegitimate child on the morning of Monday, that she afterwards got up, and proceeded to her work as a washer woman, at Mr CURTIS's and threw the child in the spot where it was found. On suspicions being excited, and the discovery made she confessed the birth, but denied that the child had been alive. Mr G.CURME Surgeon who examined the body, deposed that the child had arrived at maturity, and had certainly breathed once or twice, but was decidedly of the opinion that its death had been caused during delivery by natural and accidental circumstances and the want of proper assistanc. The Jury therefore returned a verdict in accordance with this evidence - We understand that the woman will be committed for concealment of the birth. [Note:- This was probably William CURTIS a Grocer of High East Street Dorchester. See Roberts Trade Directory of 1839.]

Sherborne Mercury Monday 18th March 1833 Page 3 " The case which stands No.36 in the calendar is one in which a woman, Elizabeth CASHER, stands charged, not with the murder of her child, but with having concealed its birth. Now the act which takes cognizance of such offences provides that where the murder of the child cannot be proved, the mother may be indicted for a misdemeanour in concealing the birth; and in the present case it does not appear to me that it will be necessary to prefer a bill for murder, but bonly the misdemeanour as from the depositionsI am of the opinion that she must be acquitted of the capital offence.

Note:- Francis Brown REDSTONE (1787/1791-1842) and his wife Frances nee BROWN were non conformists but had married at St Mary's church in Bridport on 27th Apr 1812 (CLDS Film 2427418 - Ancestry.com DRO PE/BT:RE7 Image 1244 of 1315) Francis REDSTONE was living in West Back St Holy Trinity Parish Dorchester in the June 1841 Census aged between 55 and 59 a labourer born Dorset. His wife Frances however was employed as a schoolmistress aged 50 to 54 living in Clement Alley in Bridort with their son Edward aged 20 to 24 a Harness Maker by trade. Francis Brown REDSTONE died during the 1st qtr of 1842 in the district of Bridport GRO Ref 8/22. Children from this marriage:-

She married at St John the Evangelist Church Smith Square Westminster Middlesex London Entry 230 16th Jan 1854 Ann REDSTONE aged 29 years spinster a schoolmistress resident at Smith Square father Francis REDSTONE a Draper to Noah David WADE aged 34 a bachelor a Schoolmaster resident at 11 Manchester Buildings father David WADE a farmer.

[Note:- Jane DUFALL (1798/9 - aft 1842) is in the June 1841 Census living in Chubbs Alms House St Peters Parish Dorchester aged 42 working at a laundry and helping to look after Mary her mother Aged 75-79 who is of independant means and said to have been born within Dorset. Mary DUFALL (1767-1851) however appears to have fallen ill in early 1851 and is recorded as a patient at the Dorset County Hospital in Dorchester aged 84 in the March 1851 Census. This however revords her birth place as Hadley in Devon? This Mary was buried at St Peters church aged 84 years on 14th Apr 1851. ]

Sherborne Mercury Monday 10th March 1834 Page 3: "Eliza SQUIRES, felony in the shop of Thomas BASCOMBE of Dorchester

Dorset County Chronicle Thursday 20 March 1834 " Eliza SQUIRES was indicted for stealing a tablecloth and some silk from the shop of Thomas BASCOMBE of Dorchester -- The prisoner pleaded Guilty. Maria STROUD, charged with receiving the above mentioned goods was also put to the bar. Betsy BASCOMBE, wife of the proprietor, said on the 15th of January last, in consequence of information she received from one of her apprentices, she looked for a damask table cloth which she had sold in the course of the day, and found that it had been stolen; some silk was also missing - from 30 to 31 yards; I saw the silk at about 4 oc'clock on the afternoon of the 15th January. Eliza SQUIRES on being brought into the shop in the evening of the same day acknowledged that she had stolen it. Eliza SQUIRES is the wife of a non-commisioned officer of the dragoon guards quartered in Dorchester. I had known Maria STROUD 5 or 6 years: she was a customer of mine. I had never known her guilty of any act of dishonesty before the present occasion.

Hannah FOWLER - Iam an apptrentice of Mrs Bascombe's. On the 15th January I went about six in the evening to the house of Eliza SQUIRES at Fordington. The prisoner STROUD came to the door and said that Eliza Squires was ill in bed, I said if you will allow me I will walk up to see her, I did so, and found her in bed dressed: she had her gown on. I saw her (Squires) about half an hour before in Mr Bascombe's shop. Stroud was present at the time. Eliza Squires first denied having stolen the goods, but she afterwards desired Maria STROUD to go to a box and fetch them, observing that she (Stroud) knew where to find them. she said, "Go and bring that which I gave you". Stroud then went with Mr Bascombe's shopman into another room and fethched the silk. Squires offered me a soverign to say nothing about it. The value of the silk is between £4 and £5.

Henry BLACKMORE -- I serve occasionally in Mr Bascombe's shop. I went to Stroud's door on the 15th January, it was locked; I knocked twice before I gained admission. Maria STROUD then came to the door and I enquired of her whether Eliza SQUIRES was within. She replied "Yes Sir" I then said " I wish to speak to her." Stroud on this observed that Squires was not within - that she had gone up to town upwards of an hour. I said I an sure she is within and I insist upon seeing her. Stroud then acknowledged that Squires was within, but she was in bed very ill. -- [The witness here repeated the evidence given by the previous witness; adding that he accompanied Stroud to her bedroom and she took the stolen silk out of a box.] I knew it to be Mr Bascombe's property, but Stroud said Eliza Squires had bought it of a packman. I went down stairs followed by Stroud and squires the latter of whom was dressed in every respect except that she had no shoes on. I then returned to Mr Bascombe's shop and Squires was afterwards brought to the shop in custody of a constable.

Sarah NORRIS, who lives near STROUD said the prisoner's door was generally locked about 7 o'clock in the evening.

John ANSTY, in whose service the prisoner had lived two years, gave her a good character; never knew her to have been guilty of a dishonest act.

John MORGAN of Fordington had known STROUD for years and had never heard but that she was an honest and industrious person.

Philip PEARCE, who lived in the parish of Fordington 7 years also spoke in favour of the prisoner.

The judge observed to the Jury that if the prisoner SQUIRES had not pleaded guilty the evidence which they had heard would have been enough to convict her. And with regard to the prisoner at the bar, there could he thought be no doubt that the silk found in her box was a portion of that which had been stolen from Mr Bascombe's shop. The question for their decision was, whether Stroud at the time she had the silk in her possession knew it to have been stolen. It appears that nearly nine yards of the silk had been presented to her by Squires; and is it probable that at the time she received it, which was within half an hour after the robbery, she was not conscious of its having been stolen?

The Jury returned a verdict of Guilty -- but on account of her previous good character, recommended her to mercy. The Judge: "Your verdict" gentlemen is quite right: I shall attend to your consideration. The Judge in passing sentence on SQUIRES said it was his painful duty to remark that in 1833 she had been found guilty of a siliar offence, and had been sentenced to 3 months labour. and the Judge at that time passed so lenient a sentence in the hope that it would have its desired effect: but that having failed, it became his duty to sentence her to Transportation beyond the seas for a period of seven years - STROUD was sentenced to six months imprisonment with hard labour.

Sherborne Mercury Monday 24th March 1834 " Eliza SQUIRES indicted for stealing a table cloth and some silk from the shop of Mr Thomas BASCOMBE of Dorchester. [Note:- Thomas BASCOMBE was a linen and woollen draper resident in High West Street Dorchester See Pigots Directory 1830]. The prisoner pleaded guily. True Sun Sat 22nd Nov 1834 : The Gerelamo a Neopolitan vessel was proceeding on her voyage to Trieste on the 24th od april last and went off Woolwich she ran foul of the "EDWARD" Convict ship having on board at the time two hundred female convicts which vessel was damaged considerably by the collision ---[while at her moorings] owners of EDWARD sued for damages and won their case.

Dorset County Chronicle Thursday 10th Apr 1834 : Page 4 : Joseph RIGER, Samuel BRINE, and William ROGERS, were indicted for riot and assault on the 15th March [1834]

Charles KINGSTON was at the Royal OAK o the night of the 15th; the prisoners came in and called for a quart of beer ; they began the asault by pushing a man called Crosby out of his seat.; the landlord Mr GALTON then turned the prisoners out of his house; in about a quarter of an hour afterwards witness saw the prisoners standing with other persons near the County Hall; they said "there's Charles KINGSTON: he did not take our part." Witness said "if you can't come into a public house without making a row you must expect to be turned out." Joseph RIGLER, on this struck witness and repeated the assault near Mr CHURCHILL's ;the prisoner RODGERS said " Let us have a bloody good shy at him", Witness escaped from further assault by going into a dwelling house near. Witness did not challengeeither of the prisoners to fight before he left the OAK.

Isaac HODGES - I keep the toll-gate in Colliton Row. On the 15th of last month I heard loud noise of quarreling in Sjhire Hall Lane. In consequence went down and saw Rigler with his coat off. he soon afterwards struck Kingston; the other prisoners were present at the time; about twenty other persons had assembled; after striking Kingston, Rigler said "if you are a man, come on fight." Kingston said he did not wish to fight. Seeing that the three prisoners were bent on assaulting Kingston I took him home to my residence. After staying with me a short time he went towards his house and was pursued by the prisoners; most of the neighbours were disturbed by the noise.

Abraham SCRIVEN, the watchman - I was on duty the 16th of March (Sunday morning) It was nearly one oclock on that morning when I heard a noise in the direction of Shire Hall Lane and on gong there I saw between 20 and 30 persons assembled; some of them said "I am glad you are come, watchman! I went up to the party engaged in that riot and saw Riglar striking a man, and Riglar immediately fell, but whether or not he was struck down I cannot sayl I took up Riglar told him I should take him to the watch house; Brine swore should not, and he with another person named Lock, who has since left town, rescued the prisoner Riglerl; I again took Riglar into custody, on which Brine again came up and swore that Rigler should be set at Liberty. I said "If Rigler will go home to his father he may". I then let him go, but insted of going home he went with the other prisoners. As they continued to make noise I pursued them and desired them to go home, observing to Rodgers that he had been in jail already for a previous offence. Rodgers or Brine I know not which, said I ought have been hung long ago. After hearing a good deal more exremely abusive language I took Rigler towards the watch house, and with the assistance of George HAWKINS, another watchman, secured him, but not all considerable resistance had been made by the other prisoners who were also taken.

Rigler in his defence said as he was sitting at the Oak a young man called to speak with him, and on leaving his seat Cosby, a carpenter, took it and would not give it up: this led to angry words and ultimately blows.

Brine & Rogers whom the prisoners called corroborated the fact of Cosby's taking possession of Riglar's seat and refusing to give it up

The recorder in summing up directed the attention of the Jury particularly to what passed in the street. They must be satisfied that three persons were engaged in the assault otherwise it would not amount to the charge in the indictment.

It was after 12 oc'clock when the prisoners came into the OAK a very late and unseasonable hour when the house ought to have been closed. Rodgers it appeared did not strike a blow throughout the quarrel; but if he was acting in concert with the others he was equally to blame. The evidence against the prisoners was very clear, and the charge was to his (the Chairman's) mind fully established.

The Jury found all the prisoners guilty.

The Recorder in passing sentence told the prisoners that they had been guilty of a vert serious offence; that a great deal of disturbence had been lately occasioned by the younger part of the population of this borough and of Fordington., and the Magistrates were determined to repress such turbulence. In the present case the charge having been so clearly substantiated he was himself disposed to pass a very severe sentence; but yielding to the suggestion of his brother Magistrates he was willing to try the effect of what he conceived to be a lenient punishment -- that of six calendar months imprisonment and to be kept to hard labour.

Richard PHIPPARD was indicted for embezzling 12s the property of his employer, Mr Samuel MEPHAM of Dorchester. Mr Justice Patterson having intimated to Mr GAMBIER, the prosecutor's council, that the case was more like one of forgery in common law than an act of embezzelment, the indictment was withdrawn, and the prisoner was again indicted for stealing 2lbs of tea, the property of Mr Samuel MEPHAM. On the last indictment Phippard was found guilty and sentenced to 12 months imprisonment. Note:- David GODWIN (1802-1847) was a China and Glass Dealer situated in High East Street Dorchester - Source Roberts Directory 1839 ; Pigots Dir 1844 he married 5th June 1826 to Eliza WAKLEY (1806-1873) at Atworth Chapel in Wiltshire but after marriage they initially settled in Fordington where their 1st two children were baptised before he established his shop in High East Street c 1833. They had 7 children in all but in 1834 only the first 3 had been born.

Some miscreants have lately been guilty of cutting off, in the night time, the hair from the tails and manes of nurerous farmers horses whilst in the fields in this neighbourhoodL and so prevalent has this crime become that scarely a night passes without some horse suffering in this way. Where the offence is so numerous, the theives must have some ready way of disposing of the hair, and converting it into money, and we hope that active measures will be taken to detect the theives as well as the receivers, which latter will probably be found to be the itinerant rag-dealers,so that an example may be made of them both. As a warning to those who are guilty of these offences, we find that at the Petty Sessions held at the County Hall in this town on Saturday se'nnight Thomas BEAVIS, of Fordington , was fined in the penalty of £5, and 5s 6d costs and in default thereof, to two months imprisonment in the County Gaol with hard labour, for having in his possessionon the 1st instant some hair that had been cut from two horses mains and tails the night before, belonging to MR Robert JAMES of Piddlehinton.

Mary PITFIELD, an elderly widow, residing in Fordington, and her three sons, Samuel, James and Stephen Labourers were brought before the bench this morning for examination on a charge of having stolen goods in their possession, the property of Mr. Thomas BENNETT. It appeared, from evidence of RUSSELL, our active police officer, that on Saturday last Mr SHERRIN Bailiff to Mr.W.L. HENNING Esq., observed a boy with a small bag under his arm, and having suspicion that the contents of the bag had not been honestly obtained, he examined it and found it to be oats. On questioning the boy as to how he came by the oats, he prevaricated and gave evasive answers at first, but afterwards said he took them from the bin in Mr HENNING's Stable, James PITFIELD having told him to do so; he also stated that he was going to take the oats to PITFIELD's house at Fordington, for the fowls, and that he had carted some there before, for which PITFIELD's mother gave him some victuals. The boy was detained, and Russell was sent for, and desired to go to Fordington and search the house; he did so but only discovered a few loose oats in the drawer of a table in the kitchen. On continuing his search upstairs however he found two boxes containing new gown prints, pieces of calico, a pair of corduroy trousers, a lo[t?] of course worsted, some shawls, and a fustian jacket. On asking Mary PITFIELD how she accounted for having such a quantity of new goods in her possession, she said she bought the cord for the trousers of a pack man, that she purchased some of the print at [a] shop and had some given to her, and that she bought the worsted [at] Mr Browning, draper, in his shop. RUSSELL suspected that some of the goods belonged Mr. Thomas BENNETT, and formed part of the property stolen from his shop some months since, and , having left a person in charge of the boxes, he went to Mr BENNETT, and requested him to come to PITFIELD's house to examine the goods and also called on MR BROWNING in reference to the worsted. Mr BENNETT and Mr BROWNING went to the house and Mr BENNETT immediately identified some of the property, his private mark being still on it; he said he had no doubt that the whole of the goods had been stolen from his shop. Mr BROWNING on examining the worsted at once contradicted the woman's story, and stated that he had never sold her any worsted, and that he never kept worsted the quality produced in his shop. RUSSELL then took possession of the boxes and apprehended Mary PITFIELD and her three sons 9who all live together) on suspicion.

MR BENNETT and Mr BROWNING corroborated RUSSELL's evidence so far as it related to them and the former identified some of the goods as his property.

Mary PITFIELD in her defence now said she could not recollect who she bought the cord for the trousers of; but repeated former story as to the other goods and the worsted; but reference to the latter, she again contradicted by Mr. B-- missing] --ing. The other prisoners denied having knowledge as to how the goods were obtained.

The prisoners were all committed for trial at the n[ext Sessions] but the three sons of Mary PITFIELD were admitted [missing] evening, bail having been refused for her. [There is a brief one line entry in the Salisbury and Winchester Journal Sat 22 Oct 1842 Page 4 under heading "Dorset Sessions - Sentences of the prisoners:--- Transportation -- 7 years :" Mary PITFIELD , receiving stolen property. ]
